EPK stands for Electronic Press Kit. An EPK is the document that explains your artist to music industry professionals, such as promoters. Your EPK is essentially your musical CV. So what does an EPK need to include?
Generally, you should try and keep your EPK to one page long so that it doesn't take too long to read, and it should be well presented, and visible without the need to download from an email.
Your Music!
No matter what else your EPK has in, it must include your music. It's not likely that the person receiving your EPK will have time to listen to your whole discography, so making sure to highlight your best tracks is important. There are a number of different ways to present your music in an EPK, but we have found that the best is via a private sound cloud link, as anyone with the link is able to listen to this without downloading, and it doesn't require the listener to have an account.
Social Media Links
Links to social media are important to show your fan engagement, follower count, and branding. Don't worry if you don't have a huge amount of followers if you're a small artist, as long as you are engaged and reply to fans, and have a good cohesive brand identity across posts.
Photos
Photos of the artist or album artwork can help present your branding to the person receiving your EPK, and let them see what the artist looks like as well as give them an idea of your "vibe". It is important to use high quality, well sized, professional looking photos for this. It is also a good idea to include your artist logo, if you have one.
Your Biography
This is the text that will make up the bulk of your EPK, and this is where you really want to sell your artist. The components of the biography should include some background information on the artist, any notable achievements such as shows or releases, and any eye-catching, interesting facts about the artist. Remember that the person receiving your EPK can stop reading at anytime, so you really want the most important and interesting information to be at the top.
Music Videos
If you have recently released a music video then you may want to include this in your EPK too. Remember that like with the photos, you really only want to showcase a music video if it is high quality and professional looking.
Upcoming Shows
Sometimes, you'll want the person receiving your EPK to come to a show and see you live, so it's worth popping your next local show dates into your EPK to entice them to come and check out your live show.
Your Contact Information
Sending an EPK is of course no good if the person receiving it can't get in touch. You want this to be as easy as possible, so include your email and phone number.
Quotes
You may also want to include quotes from music journalists and other music industry professionals that show off your band, but only one or two, you don't want to take away from the important information on the page!
So there you have it, a basic overview of how to construct your EPK, I hope you find it useful!
